Sicily’s leadership in fruit and vegetables: Frutech 2026 driving technological innovation
The road to Frutech 2026 has already included several important milestones, with the exhibition showcased at major industry events.
The journey began in April at Macfrut 2026, where Frutech coordinated a large Sicilian collective stand featuring 28 partners and 10 exhibitors. The pavilion highlighted the island’s excellence through companies operating in agricultural inputs, nursery production, seeds and the agri-food sector. During the exhibition, organisers also announced the sixth edition of Tomato Excellent, the initiative celebrating Sicilian tomato production, with the official awards ceremony set to take place during Frutech in November 2026.
Frutech’s territorial promotion continued in May with its participation in the OrtoDirillo Exhibition in Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa. The event once again confirmed Frutech’s commitment to promoting agronomic and technological innovation for protected cultivation, one of the most strategically important production sectors in southern Italy.
The promotional campaign reached a significant milestone on 18 June 2026, when Frutech 2026 was officially presented at the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (MASAF) in Rome. During the presentation, Sicily was recognised as being ideally positioned to become a technological hub for the Mediterranean fruit and vegetable industry.
Official figures underline Sicily’s leading role: it is Italy’s largest region for fruit and vegetable production by value and one of the country’s leading regions for organic farming. It also boasts a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)-certified production value exceeding €550 million and is home to 67 Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products.
Internationalisation will once again be a central focus, thanks to collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), which is organising a hosted buyers programme bringing 30 qualified international buyers from 15 countries, including those in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Latin America and the Gulf region.
Alongside the exhibition, Frutech will host an extensive programme of technical and scientific conferences covering key topics such as varietal innovation, digitalisation and agricultural mechanisation. The “University students meet companies” initiative will also return, strengthening the exchange of knowledge and skills between universities and the agri-food industry.
Supported by institutional partners including MASAF, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and the sector’s leading trade associations, Frutech 2026 is set to become one of the most important meeting points for the future of Italian and Mediterranean agriculture.
